Electricity prices in Switzerland 2026: where the kilowatt-hour costs least
In Switzerland, the same kilowatt-hour costs 9.64 centimes in Zwischbergen (VS) and 43.61 centimes in Kestenholz (SO). A ratio of 1 to 4.5 between two municipalities in the same country, for a strictly identical product. Here is the full 2026 ranking, the breakdown of the price, and what you can actually do when your municipality sits on the wrong side of the table.
1. Gaps nothing can justify to the consumer
The figures in this article come from the official data of the Federal Electricity Commission (ElCom) for tariff year 2026. They cover the reference category H4 — a typical 5-room household with an electric cooker and a tumble dryer, around 4,500 kWh per year — and the standard product offered by the local grid operator.
Across the 2,123 municipalities covered:
- Median price: 27.89 ct/kWh, i.e. around CHF 1,255 per year for our typical household.
- Cheapest: 9.64 ct/kWh in Zwischbergen (VS) — CHF 434 per year.
- Most expensive: 43.61 ct/kWh in Kestenholz (SO) — CHF 1,962 per year.
In other words: CHF 1,528 of difference per year, for the same consumption, between the two extremes of the country. Over ten years, more than CHF 15,000.
2. What you actually pay: four components
A Swiss electricity bill does not only charge for electricity. It adds up four blocks, only two of which genuinely depend on the market. Here is the average across cantons for 2026:

Two lessons. First, transport costs almost as much as the electricity itself: the grid accounts for around 40 % of the bill, and it is a natural monopoly whose tariff is regulated, not negotiated. Second, the federal grid surcharge — capped at 2.3 ct/kWh — is the same for everyone: it funds renewable energy support and does not depend on your municipality.
Cantonal and municipal levies, on the other hand, vary enormously. They are even the main explanation for the highest cantonal price in Switzerland: in Basel-Stadt these levies alone reach around 7.4 ct/kWh, against a Swiss average of just over 1 centime.

The ranking holds some surprises. Geneva is the 4th cheapest canton in Switzerland — in contrast with its reputation on cost of living. Zug and Nidwalden take the top two places, below 22 centimes. At the other end, Basel-Stadt, Schaffhausen and Basel-Landschaft exceed 32 centimes: in the first case because of levies, in the other two mainly because of grid costs (over 14 ct/kWh).

One canton crushes the table: the Grisons, with eight municipalities out of ten, nearly all in the Domleschg valley and the Schons valley. The other two, Zwischbergen and Simplon, are in Valais. The common thread is simple: these are mountain municipalities that produce hydroelectricity, whose residents benefit from locally generated power and a short distribution network.

Here there is no obvious geographic logic: Solothurn, Thurgau, Bern, St Gallen, Aargau, Schwyz. The common factor is structural — small grid operators, serving few customers across a wide territory, without their own generation and without economies of scale. Every kilometre of line has to be amortised over a limited number of households.

For comparison, a household driving 15,000 km per year in an electric car consumes around 2,700 kWh more. The kWh price in its municipality therefore also directly determines the cost of its mobility.

It is the question that always comes up, and the answer disappoints: in Switzerland, the electricity market is liberalised only for large consumers, those whose annual consumption exceeds 100 MWh (100,000 kWh). A household consumes between 2,000 and 6,000 kWh: it is therefore a "captive" customer of its local grid operator, which is also its supplier.
Full market opening is regularly debated in Parliament, but it is not in force for small consumers. In practice, you cannot put the price per kWh out to competition.
One deadline does concern you every year, however: grid operators must publish their tariffs for the following year by the end of August. That is the moment you find out whether your bill will rise or fall — and the only moment in the year when the subject is genuinely readable.
8. The four levers that remain
Choose a different product from the same supplier
Most operators offer several products: a standard one, an "economy" one (often the cheapest, with a more ordinary origin mix) and one or more more expensive green products. Switching from the standard product to the cheapest product of your own supplier is the only tariff choice genuinely available to a household — and it takes a simple form.
Use the dual tariff
If your operator applies a peak/off-peak tariff, shifting the washing machine, tumble dryer, dishwasher and electric car charging to off-peak hours reduces the bill without changing consumption habits, only timing.
Tackle the big items
In a Swiss household, the electric water heater, any electric heating, the tumble dryer and the freezer account for most of the consumption. A water heater set to 60 °C instead of 70 °C, an old freezer replaced, a heat-pump dryer: that is hundreds of kilowatt-hours per year, with an immediate effect on every subsequent bill.

What is the average price of electricity in Switzerland in 2026?
Around 27.9 ct/kWh for a typical H4 household (4,500 kWh per year), standard product, all levies and charges included. That amounts to an annual bill of around CHF 1,255.
Why is electricity so expensive in my municipality?
Three main causes: the cost of the local grid (a small operator serving few customers across a wide area costs more per kWh), the absence of nearby generation, and the level of cantonal and municipal levies. None of these can be influenced by the consumer.
Can you change electricity supplier in Switzerland?

When are new tariffs known?
