CHF, EUR and cross-border workers

Cross-border workers are paid in Swiss francs (CHF) but often spend in euros (EUR). The exchange rate therefore directly affects their real purchasing power. This converter uses the European Central Bank (ECB) reference rate, which you can adjust.

Note: the interbank rate shown is not what you get at the counter. Banks and exchange offices add a margin (often 1–2%). For large regular amounts, compare exchange solutions — over a year the difference can be significant.

Detailed calculation method

Conversion is instant and two-way: enter an amount in francs or euros and the other updates. The rate is editable, deliberately so.

amount in EUR = amount in CHF × rate · amount in CHF = amount in EUR ÷ rate

Default rate: CHF 1 = EUR 1.0909 (reference of 28.05.2026). Reference source: exchange rates published by the European Central Bank.

The rate shown is an interbank rate: the market rate, not the one your bank will apply. The gap is the exchange margin, usually 1 to 2 % on a standard cross-border transfer, sometimes more at a counter or ATM, plus fixed fees. On a CHF 6,000 salary converted every month, a 1.5 % margin amounts to roughly CHF 1,000 a year.

Limitations and accuracy

The rate is not updated automatically: there is no free, reliable source usable without an account, and a stale rate presented as "live" would be worse than one you control. Read the day's rate from your bank or the ECB and enter it: the result will then be exact.

For a French tax return, do not use the spot rate: the authorities apply an official conversion rate for the year concerned. A 3-centime difference on a CHF 100,000 salary changes declared income by EUR 3,000 — check the applicable rate before filing.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my transfer give me less than the calculation?

Because your bank applies a margin on the interbank rate, often 1 to 2 %, plus any fixed fees. The calculator shows the theoretical value; your statement shows the value after margin.

Which rate should I use for my tax return?

The one applied by the relevant tax administration for the year in question, not the spot rate. France publishes an official annual rate.

How can a cross-border worker cut currency costs?

Three concrete approaches: batch conversions rather than converting weekly, use a multi-currency account or a specialised provider with a transparent margin, and pay Swiss expenses directly in francs to avoid double conversion.

How often should the rate be updated?

For a monthly salary, a monthly update is ample. For a large purchase, read the rate on the day: the CHF/EUR pair can move 1 % in a few days.
